I'm enjoying being here, and looking forward to New Zealand, but I realised today that I'm also looking forward to my life settling back into a routine again. I'm actually relishing the thought of all those steady night shifts! Facebook gets boring after a while, more so if Kim won't be around to play Scrabulous with, so there's something else I might do when things get slow at work; something I haven't properly done in a very long time.

Disney burned me out, and since then drawing has seemed mechanical; a useful function and a means to an end. I want to start drawing properly again. Not for money, not for fandom or any online communities or group projects, but purely and strictly for me. I don't want to be a commercial artist. I just want to be an artist.

I want to draw what I want. Do you know, I don't even know what that is?

This is the second entry in a row (within ten minutes, actually) that has mentioned condoms, but I promise you, it's relevant.

A while back Ansell Condoms ( http://www.ansellcondoms.com.au ) ran an online contest that allowed people to submit their own photos or art to be voted on by the general public. The ones that got the highest votes would then become finalists, and the company would select a few designs from those to be printed on the front of limited edition Ansell LifeStyles condom boxes.

Well, apparently I'm a finalist with a vector piece I did of a girl in a bikini. Sweet! I've got to send them the full-res file. Hopefully they'll select my design among the winners, because I can think of no more amusing place for my art to end up than on the cover of a box which will gaze down at the sexual activity of thousands of couples Australia-wide.

Experimentation with Adobe Illustrator. For the first time I've let go of my beloved outlines and have tried something non-linear. It was surprisingly fun! This is a pretty simple experiment, obviously. This is not the type of figure I like on a woman; it's part-caricature of the current prevalent 'fashionable' body type. Don't touch her, guys, you might put your eye out on her jutting collarbone. ;)

Also, I have so much love for the PNG-24 file format.

So, Good Friday. It's been dubbed "Jesus-on-a-Stick Day", and Sunday is "Zombie Jesus Day". My birthday is on Zombie Jesus Day this year, how cool is that?

[livejournal.com profile] __mandrew__ had a party here yesterday that started at 10am, meandered out into the City, came back here, and didn't finish 'til 3am the next morning. It was AWESOME. I got to see a lot of people I haven't seen in a while. Had one of the best iced chocolates I've had in years. Got to see "300" with fourteen friends. The movie was basically a two-hour-long Nutra-Grain commercial with unintentionally hilarious parts, and believe me, nobody's complaining. That's some damn fine entertainment right there. Just probably not quite in the sense that the filmmakers intended. Heehee.

[livejournal.com profile] inc_b and [livejournal.com profile] sesquipedeviant are out shopping for my birthday present, apparently, and Joe wants to work on Something Secret downstairs all day when he gets back, so I'm being expelled from the house, and am probably going to take Kim and Chris along to see Hot Fuzz, if Kim ever regains consciousness.

Joey and I are going to make me a bag out of hessian, and sew on the Powerful Owl patch that Mandrew got me from Panama.

Turkey and cranberry sandwiches are the best thing ever.

A quick clarification - most of the sketches won't be cleaned up to this level. I just enjoyed this one a lot, and got carried away. ^_^ I hope you like it, [livejournal.com profile] almalthia!

This is what I worked on tonight. It's finished, unless the commissioner requests a color change. Very basic pose, and you don't usually see many naked girls getting around with deadly scythe-like weaponary, but that's what was requested, and who am I to argue? I like drawing nekkedness. ^_^

I tried a few new things here - gave the lighting some sweaty shiny schiznit, gave her a very contrasty sunset lighting scheme, and (for once) actually painted a small background in Photoshop. The commission was meant to be background-less, but I figured I'd toss that in because he's had to wait a while.

Just a reminder, she's NEKKED, hence the cut and preview image. )

I'll be uploading this to Dev (er... maybe? There's definitely no SEX in this one) and the usual places once I have the commissioner's go-ahead.

Totally off-topic, Robbie finished reading HBP tonight. I think his world is crumbling around him. Guess who his favourite character was? ;)

Ooh, and Vix finished the coloring on Crikey Duck. We've just gotta do the lettering. There'll be a definite update tomorrow night after work, and we've also got a smaller-size link banner I'll be waving around madly in my update ramble.

[EDIT] In the two minutes since I posted this, I've noticed two things I want to change.

[EDIT #2] ....four things.
tania: (CD - Zakiya: PWNED.)

[livejournal.com profile] boatswain is one kickass colorist. :3 I did the lineart and inking. I seem to have been doing a lot of collaborations lately, and there'll be more to come - taking hours spent screwing around with digital coloring out of the equation brings back a lot of the joy of cartooning for me. :)

Posted a couple more Furbid auctions - one more print I found, of a Foxtaur girl (I really need to go through my old stuff properly someday; right now it's all just sitting there in a sea chest...), and an electric pencil sharpener.

The latter is a wrench to part with, yet ironically I've never used it. Why? 'Cuz I got it for free from an American, and it's got an American power socket... which wouldn't be a problem, except it needs American voltage too, and to buy a stepdown voltage converter costs more than the sharpener is actually worth. I'm talking into three figures here. >_< Waaiii. So I continue to stop drawing every five minutes so I can sharpen my pencil over a bowlful of shavings. 9_9;

Still, it's a bloody awesome sharpener, and SOMEONE will get a great deal of enjoyment out of it. :)

I'm still pecking away at commissions. My problem is still coloring; I can't seem to stick with one image for too long, so I've got a few things sitting here half-colored. I swear, I need to hire someone to give me a good beating on a daily basis. What the hell is wrong with me?? 9_9

Next time I offer commissions, in the distant future, I think I'll offer them as collabs, and pair up with a colorist. I'd sacrifice half the profits in order to avoid piddling around in Photoshop for hours on end. Computer programs bore the bajeesus out of me; it's why I never bothered making the transition from 2D to 3D. The drawing is where all the romance is.

I did a little cleanup of my art stuff recently and found a bunch of old prints. I'm not going to use them, but I also don't like throwing things like this out - I figure there's someone out there who could get a lot of enjoyment out of 'em. Therefore, I'm auctioning off most of the prints (a lot of 5) on Furbid: https://www.furbid.ws/cgi-bin/auction/item.pl?item=2299

There's a photo of all six prints over there, and descriptions as well.

X-posted without mercy. (Well, nah... only here and Furrtive.)

Sketch for Aquanite (Barter - I offered her this instead of paying postage on some TLK items she's sending me).

I love doing sketches like this, though I'm still getting the hang of the whole tablet thing. D'you reckon anyone'd be interested in tablet-style commissions? Simple sketches, flat color, rough-expressive kind of stuff? I enjoy it a lot more than dicking around in Photoshop for hours on end, nice though the end product may be. (Forgive me; it's late and I'm blunt).

Speaking of tablets, I received my Wacom Intuos at work today.

More on that in a friendslocked entry.
tania: (Kiya - Whatever.)
Nothing particularly good in this lot, I'm afraid.

OK, I sorta do like this one. Icon sketch for Rebecca. :)

More sketches under the cut... )

Whelp, my finances sorted themselves out in the wake of the sketch sale, and I was finally able to get Crow a birthday present.

Props to Evana for, once again, being absolutely freaking BRILLIANT. And fast. And sweet. <3 <3 <3

In lieu of us actually being able to hang out, drink and Be Merry for your birthday, I give you this. ^_^ Hopefully someday we'll be able to afford to do this in person.

(Man, people ALWAYS give me donkey-ears in photos! Pick on someone your own height, you bastards. ;_; ;D )

First of a few images along these lines... I'm still inept in Corel.

I've gotta say, I'm really happy with the auction results. All in all, I've earned US$250. Almost all of it is going towards seeing Rob and I safely through that 'gap week' when I won't be paid from either the job I'm leaving, or the new job I'm starting (it has a different pay cycle). Hopefully we won't have to borrow money from mum at all.

It was the "Lick" picture that really surprised me. Most of the drawings went for between ten and fifteen dollars, which is what I'd expected. The nude foxtaur climbed steadily the whole time and topped out at US$38, which I was VERY pleased with.

I'd been surprised by the lack of reaction to the "Lick" drawing, though - it was one of my favourites. Checked this morning, everything was in more or less the same place...

...checked again this afternoon, when the auctions had ended, and bidding for the "Lick" sketch had reached US$81.

Which is just plain WRONG.

But I'm not going to argue. (Robbie would kill me.) ^_^;;;

My art contest ends in the next two days. I'm already pretty sure I know who is going to win, but I must confer with my trusty judges first. And update the entries page.

I'm cleaning up Crikey Duck #5 tonight; it'll be out this weekend.

Not much else is new. I'm twitchy with new-job anticipation, I love my boy, and I can't bloody well find my chapstick.

Less that one day remains on my Furbid original sketch auctions. Check 'em out here: http://www.furbid.ws/cgi-bin/auction/aboutview.pl?user=Animator

Also, I finished one of my pics this weekend, but it's for a freelance client and I have to check whether I'm able to post it online or not before I can go flashing it around. :3

I now have bids on two of my ten-dollar sketches and one of the bits of production art on Furbid SF, and bids on both werewolf comics on the original Furbid. OMGyey!

If anyone else is interested, the art auctions are here: https://www.furbid.ws/cgi-bin/auction/aboutview.pl?user=Animator
...and the werewolf comic auctions are here:

I should probably do some crosspromotion, too. *prods self into sluggish action*
tania: (Kiya - Whatever.)

Heh heh heh.

That was done with my graphics tablet. It's only really my second(ish) attempt to seriously draw something on that thing. I'm relieved to say I'm not sucking quite so much now. Heh, all I gotta do NOW is, uh, draw characters on-model and relearn linework. Still, I gotta admit... 'tis fun to play with the tablet. :)

Writing letter of resignation and then hitting the sack. Have been woefully sleep-deprived this weekend. Will hate self in morning. x_x

Can someone lend me a time machine? I'd like to skip the next fornight, please. ^_^

[EDIT] Letter of resignation complete. I was sure to take most of the responsibility for my leaving the job onto my own shoulders; it never hurts to keep things respectful in your final weeks, particularly when you're leaving an employer in the lurch.

I guarantee Robbie will read it and tell me I'm being 'too nice', but that doesn't bother me. This employer isn't a bastard (low pay or no). Compared to some of my previous bosses, he's on the opposite end of the scale, and paying minimum wage is his job-given right. ;) Doesn't mean I have to stay, though. So I'm leaving without a particular feeling of vindication OR guilt, and that's the way it should be.

Still looking forward to my new adventure. Goodnight. :)
tania: (Kes - Hmmm...)

The URL is now operational - http://www.crikeyduck.com will take you to the right place. :)

I also gave LJ's automatically generated calendar archive the boot, 'cuz it didn't do what I wanted it to do, so there's a new archive system in place which is far more user-friendly, easier to read and far less numerically-based.

*trots back to Corel to finish vector-inking a commission*

Yanno... vector inking is lovely and all, but I sure as heck hope I get faster and/or better at it. 9_9; Doesn't help that I'm flying blind... Is anyone aware of any good vector tutorials geared toward cartoon-style artists?

Remember a while back when I said I was planning to sell off some sketches? They're up on the new Furbid.

I'm also selling three pieces of original production art from The Lion King 3 in a dutch auction, cheap!

Get 'em while they're flat and on paper. ^_^

tania: (Kes - Hmmm...)
I decided to give Furbid's new system a whirl, and I've been meaning to sell a sketch anyway, so:

The new system is very nice and slick. My major disappointment, however, is that you have to pay to have a thumbnail on your auction. :P I think they've made a bit of a mistake with that one... but hey, everyone's gotta make money somehow. :)

If you're interested, please bid! Paying for a yearlong LJ subscription to host Crikey Duck flattened what was left of my Paypal balance recently. T_T
